A fine English violin made by Lockey Hill (ca. 1770) for Longman Lukey & Co. Lockey Hill was the fifth born son of Joseph Hill, the distinguished ancestor of W.E. Hill of the Hill & Sons firm. Born in 1756, Lockey made many instruments for Longman’s dealership in London. This beautiful violin has a rich brown varnish that stands out among the maker’s oeuvre as most of his instruments have golden or red varnishes.
