A fine violin by Lorenzo Ventapane (1780 – 1843)

One of the most important makers of the Neapolitan tradition, Lorenzo Ventapane is connected with the Gagliano family.  He likely studied with Giovanni or Nicolo, his son.

The back in two pieces is of quarter cut maple with a faint medium curl. The wood of the ribs and scroll is similar to that of the back and is marked with a finer curl. The top, in two pieces, is of finely grained spruce, broadening toward the edge. The varnish is soft in texture, and golden brown in color.
